Navigating Change with Courage and Confidence: A Message for Our Graduates

What an incredible morning it’s been! Thank you all for making it such a special time. I’m so proud of each of you—especially our graduates—and I know that God has big plans for your lives. Today, I’d like to take a moment to share some thoughts that I hope will encourage you as you step into this new chapter.

As I sat in my office earlier, I couldn’t help but think back to my own graduation. I remember heading off to college, completely unprepared for some of the basic life skills—like doing my laundry! In my first week, I learned the hard way that hot water and mixing reds and whites don’t always work out so well. Let’s just say I ended up with a lot of pink clothes, and a lot of lessons learned!

And so, graduates, I know you’re about to face a lot of changes. New routines, new responsibilities, and new challenges are just around the corner. But remember this: you’re not the first generation to face change. Every generation has its own unique challenges—just think of the “Greatest Generation,” who came of age during the Great Depression and World War II. They faced immense obstacles, but they also accomplished so much. They taught us the value of family, community, and civic responsibility.

In the same way, you have challenges to meet. And you can do it! But let’s be real: sometimes change feels overwhelming. You might even feel some anxiety—like Joshua did in the Bible, when he had to step up after Moses passed away. Moses was a giant of a leader, and Joshua had big shoes to fill. But God gave Joshua a promise: “Be strong and courageous…for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).

This promise is for you too. As you step into this new season, here are three key reminders to keep in mind:

1. Let Your Past Stay in the Past

Joshua had to move on from the era of Moses. Graduates, the same is true for you. High school, those teachers and friends, the comfort of those familiar halls—they’ve been important, but now it’s time to press on. Don’t let longing for yesterday’s simpler days rob you of today’s joy. God has a new adventure for you, and it requires looking forward, not back.

2. Expect Turbulence in Times of Transition

God called Israel to cross the Jordan River—and it wasn’t easy. Graduates, there will be days when life feels like a rushing river. You’ll face laundry mishaps, late nights, bills, and worries. Don’t run from these challenges—lean into them. God often leads us into tough places, not because He wants to make life hard, but because He’s shaping your faith and resilience. In these moments, you’ll discover just how strong God has made you.

3. Embrace God’s Promises for Your Future

God promised Joshua, “Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you.” That same God has a plan for your life. He is with you. He will provide for you. I’ve seen this firsthand—like when Melissa and I didn’t have money for groceries and God provided in ways we couldn’t have imagined. He’s never let us down. And He won’t let you down either.

Finally, God promises to give you rest. In a world that is often anxious and overwhelmed, remember this: when you trust Him, you’ll find a peace that surpasses understanding. Life may not look exactly like you imagined, but it will be filled with His grace and provision.

So, graduates, here’s my charge to you:
Be strong. Be courageous. Step forward with faith. God’s plans for you are bigger and better than you can imagine. Trust Him, and watch Him do incredible things in your life.

Let’s celebrate today, but let’s also look forward to the amazing journey ahead. God bless you, graduates!
