Opening the Eyes of Our Hearts
At Great Bridge Baptist Church this past Sunday, Pastor Will Langford led us into a deeply moving passage from Ephesians 1:17-23, reminding us that true spiritual growth is not about knowing more facts — it's about having the eyes of our hearts enlightened.
In a world where challenges feel heavier and healthy community seems harder to find, Paul’s prayer for the church at Ephesus offers us a lifeline. Pastor Will shared that spiritual health doesn't come simply from knowing doctrines intellectually — it comes from experiencing Jesus personally.
Two powerful themes stood out:
An Epidemic of Dryness: Many of us know facts about Jesus but feel spiritually dry because the truth hasn't captured our hearts.
An Epidemic of Passionless Faith: It's possible to become so familiar with Christian practices that we lose our wonder and excitement about Jesus.
True spiritual sight — the kind Paul prayed for — transforms facts into felt, living truths. It shifts us from being casual Christians into passionate followers who know Jesus not just with our minds, but with our whole being.
We don't need new information about Jesus; we need a deeper experience of Him. As Pastor Will said, Jesus isn't a performer trying to keep us entertained. He's the living water we access when we dig deeper, not wider.
Reflection Questions:
When was the last time you felt truly awestruck by the presence of Jesus in your life?
What is one area of your faith that feels dry or passionless right now?
How might you pray for "the eyes of your heart to be enlightened" this week?
Are there facts you know about Jesus that you haven't yet experienced personally? How can you seek deeper understanding through prayer?
